This is an article in the Washington Post about the tuxedo dress that Billy Porter wore to this year's Oscars. The article talks about the way in which Porter pushes the boundaries of gender conformity and creates space for others in the LGBTQ community to do the same. Porter believes that as a queer black man he should use his celebrity status and platform to make political statements, and his fashion choice at the oscars is a perfect example of that.
Washington Post Billy Porter Tuxedo Dress
I loved when Billy Porter made waves with the tuxedo dress, but this analysis of how important it is for people to make statements like he did through his fashion choices highlighted how powerful his choice was. Thank you for posting!
ReplyDeletePorter's intent to be "a walking piece of political art" at public spectacles is refreshing. I am frequently frustrated by the lack of political engagement in which celebrities partake. In an apparent effort to achieve or maintain popularity with a wide swath of the population, they seem to be wasting an impactful platform that could be used to positively influence society.
