Visiting The Stonewall Inn

I am in nyc for spring break, and of course, I had to visit Stonewall! Walking in and around the bar was surreal - it was crazy to envision everything that happened almost 50 years ago inside those four walls. As an added bonus, the first picture features alums of this class - Abby Schantz and Eliana Keinan! They say hi to Professor Selig!

  1. This is awesome, Kai! It's interesting how in the photo of the description outside of the inn, it states that the event at Stonewall "uprising catalyzed the LGBTQ civil rights movement," whereas in the last photo, it's described as a "gay liberation movement" against "oppressions... long endured in silence." This reminds me of discussions we've had in class about where Stonewall fits into LGBTQ history. The first photo is similar to how Stonewall is typically perceived - as an uprising that started the gay rights movement. The last photo is closer to what we've learned this semester - that Stonewall was a part of a larger movement that began much earlier, in response to legal and societal walls that were developed. As we explored in class, it's important to contextualize Stonewall this way - as a key opportunity that was created to a broader movement against an array of discrimination within the workplace, the criminal justice system, and society overall.
I'm excited to hear more about what you noticed while visiting!

  2. This is so cool, I'm so jealous! I can imagine being there in person made what we've discussed and read about in class that much more real. Thanks for sharing the pictures!
