Hi all! Today's reading and discussion reminded me of an article I read a while back about gay couples that would have the older individual adopt the younger as a means of securing legal benefits that would otherwise be nearly impossible to obtain. It's interesting to see how this fits into the narrative of marriage equality...let me know what you think!
Here it is!
This is a really interesting loophole I wouldn't have thought of before. Thanks so much for posting the article! I wonder if/how this impacted their relationship dynamics.
ReplyDeleteCrazy to read that "One Pennsylvania couple has been denied an annulment of their adult adoption; that case is going to a higher court early next year." I cannot imagine how frustrated I would be if I were denied this annulment.
ReplyDeleteI thought this was super interesting and something I didn't realize existed/was possible. I think it's cool how they managed to get around the system's refusal to allow same-sex marriage. It also made me think about Romi's post about marriage and what it means to different people/it doesn't necessarily mean sex or procreation. What does adoption mean and what does it mean to be in a family/do the actual roles/names matter?
